Our Achievements

Here is a snapshot of a few of our major achievements -

With persistent efforts of the Office of the CCPD all the States/UTs have appointed State Commissioners for persons with Disabilities. 14 Commissioners have been appointed on full time basis. Get more information on the state commissioners here.

On the advice of CCPD, 24 States have declared District Collectors as Deputy/Additional Commissioners, Disabilities.

All the State governments and UT Administrations have constituted Medical Boards for issuing disability certificates in all the districts. Number of persons with disabilities who have been given disability certificates has considerably improved after Office of the CCPD took it up with the Chief Secretaries.

Annual national meetings of State Commissioners have been held every year to review implementation status of PWD Act, 1995. 9th Meeting was held on 11.02.2010.

Organized 11 Workshops on Barrier Free Environment and Access Audit in which 572 Persons from States and UTs were trained on Access Audit.

39 buildings/public places like government offices, railway stations, Stadia airports, bus stops, hotels, post offices, places of worship, hospitals, banks etc. got access audited through Access Audit Teams and made disabled friendly.

5 national workshops on Inclusive Education and Employment to promote inclusion of children with disability in regular schools have been held. Small booklets on education of children with disabilities were developed. The workshops helped in awareness creation among parents, teachers and also in integration and inclusion of children with disabilities in regular schools.

Awareness about the capabilities of persons with disabilities and the mandatory provision for reservation and appointment of persons with disabilities in government organizations was created. The workshops also became instrumental in sensitizing corporate sector to employ persons with disabilities.

Workshop on Utilization of Skills of Visually Impaired for Officers of the level of J.S./Director/D.S. in various Ministries/Departments of Government of India dealing with administration was organized on 14.08.2002. This helped in appreciating the capabilities of persons with visual impairment and the need for provision of assistive devices for them to utilize their full potential.

An Inter-Country meeting of South-East Asia Region Member countries of World Health Organization on 'Promoting Employment Opportunities for Persons with Disabilities' in collaboration with WHO was held on 20.02.2003 and 21.02.2003. Representatives from Bangladesh, Bhutan, India, Maldives, Myanmar, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Thailand participated.

A Regional Workshop on 'Skill Development of Persons with Disabilities for Inclusive Rural Development' was organized on 14.03.2008 that was attended by people from technical universities/institutions, agricultural universities and professionals, government officials and gram-pradhans.

Regional seminars in collaboration with the apex organizations in the disability sector were organized for creation of awareness and resolution of issues between NGOs/State Government departments and the Ministry and Apex organizations under it.

A Multi-purpose and mobile Grievance camp at Dehradun was organized in collaboration with the State Government of Uttarakhand for distribution of disability certificates, bus Passes, railway concessions, aid and appliances and redressal of grievances through a single window system in July, 2001. 2030 persons were benefited in the camp.

25 Joint Mobile Courts of CCPD and concerned State Commissioners, Disabilities in 15 States were held since November 2006. 10,062 grievances of persons with disabilities concerning various departments of State Government/District Administration/Central Government Organizations were filed and sorted out on the spot.

The Office of the CCPD received 21,883 complaints, including those in the Mobile Courts till February 2010. Out of them, 20,864 have been disposed off and 1,019 were under process as on 28.02.2010. Read more about the Success Stories.

Suo-motu cases initiated by the Office of the CCPD have considerably improved compliance with regard to reservation admissions, appointment, benefits under Poverty Alleviation Schemes, allotment of land/houses against reservation against reserved quota for persons with disabilities, accessibility of public places/transport etc.

Office of the CCPD has brought out publications on Barrier Free Environment, Compilation of Judgments of various Courts on disability issues and Orders of CCPD that have proved to be of much use to various stakeholders.

Office of the CCPD has made its website accessible to persons with disabilities especially those with visual impairment. Government organizations are being advised to make their websites accessible.

Office of the CCPD also contributes in assisting organizations in formulation of policies for the benefit of persons with disabilities, training on implementation of reservation in jobs, carrying out accessibility audits and raising awareness.
